What is it like to be diagnosed with cancer?

People often ask me, “What is it like to be diagnosed with cancer?” My mother used to tell me that just about anything was better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. After having been diagnosed with cancer, I can say with complete confidence that this is debatable. The best way to get inside my head, and probably that of any other cancer patient, is to read a snippet of my book, "How Connie Got Her Rack Back”, here: Chapter 1 - THE NEWS.

A Trip to the Beach

We all have our insecurities and perhaps I’m mentioning the beach bit now - in the middle of winter no less - because I just got back from a beach vacation. No one wants to run full-on Bo Derek down the sandy edge of the ocean after eating Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas cookies and all the penne a la vodka in between. In this case, we are talking about me. Or are you in this scenario also? Read the full article as published in BIZCATALYST 360°  HERE!

How to Calm the Quiet

When most of us think of the word “quiet” we think of peace and tranquility, right? When you have cancer, or any other illness for that matter, quiet brings on a new meaning. It is the solitude of your illness. Well, what does that mean? you might ask.

Here is the thing about having cancer. You can be in a room full of people who love you, talk to you, cheer for you and are just plain THERE for you but, you alone are with your cancer.

  • I am the oncology MSW at Saratoga Hospital and I was able to deliver a generous check to my patient to help her cover her medical expenses for her cancer treatments. There are very limited facilities where she lives. Yesterday she received an envelope from GYRB. It was filled with gift cards for food, gas, etc. She cried happy tears to me...
